An undercover video investigation by Townhall has captured stunning audio and visual footage of California Gov. Gavin Newsom praising the Democratic Socialists of America.
Recorded on Oct. 17, the footage featured a Townhall reporter who was pretending to be a loyal Democrat voter asking Newsom about the DSA.
“I was wondering, because I’m a younger voter, and a lot of us, like, we want to see the Democratic Party move forward,” the female reporter said to him.
“You know, we don’t want more Kamala Harris,” she continued. “We want, you know, more, I guess, democratic socialist policies. Like, where do you see, I guess, the Democratic Party going?”
UNDERCOVER: GAVIN NEWSOM SAYS THE DSA IS “GOING TO BE DOMINANT” AND “MAINSTREAM” IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY!
“The DSA, the energy and the desire and demand for bold change, not incremental change, is very much going to be dominant. I mean, that’s going to be a mainstream Democratic movement. Absolutely. No question about that.”…

Newsom replied that he sees the DSA becoming “dominant” and going “mainstream.”
“No one is arguing to manage the status quo and fail more efficiently, so I think that with the DSA, the energy and the desire and demand for bold change, not incremental change, is very much going to be dominant,” he said.
“I mean, that’s going to be a mainstream Democratic movement,” he added, signaling he believes the DSA will essentially take over the Democratic Party sooner rather than later.
“Absolutely,” he concluded. “No question about that. You can’t play in the margins anymore. The whole system’s broken. It’s completely unbalanced. And you can’t — we can’t manage the decline. We have to completely reimagine.”
The governor’s remarks prompted a whirlwind of backlash on social media, including from Republican California gubernatorial nominee Steve Hilton and former Republican Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt.
“The system’s broken” says Gavin Newsom.
Oh FFS. You ARE the system! You’ve run California for eight years. You had a Democrat supermajority. You could do anything you wanted.
We got the highest poverty rate, unemployment rate and cost of living in the country. Vote for CHANGE!
— Steve Hilton (@SteveHiltonx) October 26, 2026
In a social media post, Hilton accused Newsom of having squandered his time in office accomplishing nothing substantive for Californians.
Pratt meanwhile accused Newsom of “throwing in the towel and calling for the DSA to burn down the entire system” on account of polls showing other, more radical Democrats beating him in 2028.
“What a scumbag,” Pratt added.

This wasn’t the first instance of Newsom praising the DSA.
While appearing last month on PBS NewsHour, he made the case that the current iteration of the Democratic Party is “pretty aligned” with the DSA and its agenda.
“If you have these candidates and this platform that is clearly animating the base, energizing turnout, should more of those ideas be worked into the broader Democratic platform?” he was asked at the time, according to Fox News.
“I think they are,” Newsom replied. “I mean, we want money out of politics. I’ve been supporting clean money campaigns for decades.”
September was the same month that a former DSA leader who fled the organization issued a statement warning of the group’s “frightening” and “extreme” radicalism.
