White House says Trump-Putin phone call ‘going well’

President Trump’s phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine has lasted for at least 45 minutes and is “going well,” a White House official said Tuesday while the call was still in progress.

“Happening Now — President Trump is currently in the Oval Office speaking with President Vladimir Putin of Russia since 10:00 am EDT.

The call is going well, and is still in progress,” White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino posted on X at 11 a.m.

At 11:35 a.m., Mr. Scavino confirmed the call was still in progress.

The call comes amid Mr. Trump’s efforts to get his Russian counterpart’s support for a 30-day ceasefire in the war.

Mr. Trump previewed the call Sunday night while speaking to reporters on Air Force One. He said that there was “a very good chance of reaching a deal” and the conversation would focus on “dividing up assets.”

“We will be talking about power plants,” Mr. Trump said. “I think a lot of it has already been discussed at length by both sides, Ukraine and Russia.”

Last week, Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire, putting pressure on Mr. Putin to pause the fighting. So far, he has balked at the U.S. proposal, citing “nuances” that could sink the deal. He has suggested roadblocks could include the Ukraine receiving U.S. military aid or mobilizing new forces.

Russia’s troops are pushing Ukrainian forces out of the southwest Russian region of Kursk, which limits leverage for Ukraine in peace talks.
