Vietnam announced Wednesday it will allow SpaceX to provide its Starlink satellite internet service in the communist-run country on a trial basis.
The trial period will last until 2030. The government said there is no limit on foreign ownership of the satellite internet service — a move seen as a way for Vietnam to avoid U.S. tariffs.
Under the agreement, SpaceX can provide mobile and fixed internet services to customers in Vietnam.
Only 600,000 Vietnamese customers can sign up for the service under the terms of the trial agreement.
Vietnam has assigned the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Science to oversee Starlink’s operation during the trial period and ensure the project does not compromise national security.
The launch of Starlink services in Vietnam follows SpaceX’s expansion into other Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
SpaceX first showcased the Starlink technology in Vietnam in 2023, and company representatives met with Party General Secretary To Lam in September to discuss the deal.
