United Nations
After covering the United Nations these last few weeks, I feel the need to share with you what I have witnessed.
For several months, the UN has been anticipating a summit conference chaired by President Macron of France, and the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia. This conference was scheduled to take place in the middle of the month of June. It was postponed due to the current situation in the Middle East. The goal of the conference was to explore the creation of a Palestinian state.
In meeting after meeting at the UN, Israel is accused of genocide. The United States. has invoked the veto power in the Security Council in support of Israel, and for resolutions that did not condemn Hamas as terrorists.
On June 12, the Security Council met in an emergency session reacting to Israel’s attack on Iran. The Iranian ambassador kept saying “Israel attacked Iran and must be held accountable.” In reaction to the statement, Israel’s ambassador, Danny Danon, said, “Israel acted to prevent its destruction.” He also alluded to Iran’s history of repeated cries of “Death to Israel.” Ambassador Danon went on to explain that Israel felt the need to attack because Israeli intelligence discovered that Iran and its surrogates were planning to fire missiles into Israel from all sides. Ambassador Danon also said, “We waited for diplomacy to work but Iran just continued.”
Ambassador Danon noted that Iran was looking for sympathy and claimed they were the victims. Iran also made threats to the U.S. with ”Death to America.” He said Israel had to act to protect its people and the world. I note that the German ambassador to the UN said, “Israel is doing our dirty work.” It needs to be noted that although several nations still attacked Israel, as they always do, some nations were far more reserved in their comments.
Ambassador Danon ended his presentation with the following words, “We are protecting the entire world. We will not stop until Iran is dismantled. This is not Israel’s fight but the world’s fight.”
In an emergency session on June 22, the acting American ambassador to the UN offered the following: “The United States’ planes targeted nuclear facilities with the aim to end Iran’s nuclear capacity and to aid Israel with the right to self-defense.” She went on to say that “for 40 years Iran has shouted ‘Death to Israel’ and ‘Death to America.’” She continued that Iran is also responsible for the killing of many Americans as well as Israelis. The American ambassador also said, “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.”
On June 23rd, a ceasefire was reached between Iran and Israel. The United States, with the help of Qatar, enabled this to happen. We need to hope that the truce holds and that any promises made will not allow for a nuclear Iran.
