A threatening note that diverted a Sun Country flight was a fake written by two children on the plane.
Sun Country flight 593 left Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport for Mazatlan International Airport in Mexico Wednesday but was forced to land at El Paso International Airport in Texas instead.
“The aircraft landed without incident, passengers have been deplaned safely, and will be provided overnight accommodations. … We apologize to our passengers and all those affected by this situation, but safety and security are our highest priorities,” Sun Country Airlines wrote in a statement on social media.
A note reading “You Are All Going to Die, Help Me.” had been found by passengers on board and reported to the crew, prompting the crew to alert law enforcement and divert the flight. The threat, however, was a fake, concocted by two young children among the 156 passengers on board, said FBI El Paso Special Agent in Charge John Morales.
Mr. Morales did not specify how old the two children were. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas declined to press charges over the incident.
