Swalwell Campaign Denies Harassment Allegations – HotAir

Yesterday I wrote about the allegations that had started to circle around Rep. Swalwell as he campaigns for governor of California. A progressive Democrat named Cheyenne Hunt put out videos on TikTok alleging that a friend of hers had been sexually harassed by Swalwell and that, since talking about it, other women had come forward. In a thread on Twitter, Hunt claimed she was helping connect these women with reporters and that another, larger group of women were independently talking to reporters.

Today, Swalwell’s campaign responded to the allegations by denying everything.

A spokesman for Rep. Eric Swalwell, a leading Democratic candidate for California governor, on Tuesday denounced online claims that the congressman had inappropriate relationships with young congressional staff members.

“This false, outrageous rumor is being spread 27 days before an election begins by flailing opponents who have sadly teamed up with MAGA conspiracy theorists because they know Eric Swalwell is the frontrunner in this race,” said spokesman Micah Beasley in a statement that was first reported by Politico…

“In 13 years, no one in Eric Swalwell’s Congressional office has ever been asked to sign an NDA. Ever,” Beasley said. “In 13 years, not a single ethics complaint by any staff in his office or any other office has ever been lodged. Ever.”

Politico adds that Swalwell’s campaign has been ignoring these rumors for weeks.

For weeks, the campaign had not commented as the swirl of allegations percolated largely among liberal social media users. But the volume of the rumors and speculation about forthcoming accusations increased significantly in recent days, crossing over to right-leaning influencers. On Monday, the conservative news outlet the Daily Caller News Foundation published a story largely based on posts by one influencer, who is a former Democratic congressional candidate.

That escalation — combined with primary ballots dropping in less than a month and specific assertions to dispute, such as the NDAs — was the tipping point that pushed the Swalwell campaign to respond, said the campaign adviser, who was granted anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

So far, Cheyenne Hunt isn’t backing down. She replied to the Politico story on X:

Another woman who has posted about the allegations had a similar response:

Arielle Fodor, another influencer who posted about allegations of sexual misconduct by Swalwell, dismissed the congressman’s statement Tuesday.

“My comment on the record: If they think I have teamed up with MAGA, they are cracked in the head,” Fodor told The Post in an email.

It would be very convenient for Swalwell if the women sharing these claims (and the ones allegedly making the allegations behind the scenes) were all Republicans. That would make it much easier to blame this on Trump. But it seems unlikely that there were a lot of Trump supporters working in his offices. If these women do come forward, they will all be on his side of the aisle.

Ultimately, this is going to be about whether or not the allegations made by these women can be backed up by a major paper like the LA Times or the NY Times. If they can’t then this story won’t move beyond the rumors and denial stage. If they can be backed up then Swalwell’s denials at this early stage won’t matter.
