Sunday Smiles – HotAir

Over the past 80 days, there has been so much winning for Republicans.

Winning is good. Very good.

Overconfidence, though, is bad. Very bad. And I worry that some people are getting way too confident, mistaking momentum for inevitability. “We have been winning” does not necessarily mean “We will continue to win in the future.”

Prior to Trump’s victory in November, conservatives had been on a losing streak, barely holding our own. The censorship regime here and abroad was well-funded and, with the exception of X, mostly successful. Hundreds of billions of dollars were flowing from the federal government to leftist causes and institutions. The Pravda Media’s stranglehold on information flow was slipping but still largely intact. K-12 and Higher Ed were pushing forward with insane policies and teaching dangerous ideologies to kids.

America and the Western World were at imminent risk.

Trump’s victory changed all that. Or, more realistically, Trump’s victory created the conditions where it is possible to change all that.

I say possible because, well, so far, much less of it has changed than you think. Yes, USAID is closed down, but judges are still putting roadblocks everywhere to Trump’s changes and with such slim majorities in the House and Senate, even the defection of a few members all that momentum can be slowed or even stopped.

The immune system of the establishment is fighting back and fighting back hard. So far, it has been largely unsuccessful in the United States, but it is doing much better around the world and may stifle progress here in the United States. Pierre Poilievre, after months of looking like he will inevitably storm to victory in Canada, is on track to lose big in Canada. The transnational elite in Europe is fighting back, and while they are deeply unpopular, they are also using their perches of power to strike back hard.

In Germany, the police are now raiding dissenters’ homes for posting memes; the UK is doing much the same, throwing people in jail–Tommy Robinson is sitting in solitary confinement right now with deteriorating mental and physical health because he screened a controversial documentary and a mother is jail with a 3-year sentence for taking away her child’s iPad, and the police are intimidating people for asking (or being perceived to ask) others to spear English.

Elections in Europe are being canceled, and candidates are thrown off the ballot. AfD, the most popular political party in Europe, is being ostracized and continually being threatened with being declared illegal. The EU Digital Services Act is still a threat to publishers and social media companies.

Here in the United States, the Pravda Media are on the ropes but still extraordinarily powerful when it comes to defining issues. That WE can see through them, and large numbers of others are waking up, they still hold sway over enough people to keep the Left in the game.

And, believe it or not, the censorship regime is rebuilding with the help of governments outside the United States. I will have a piece on that coming us. You may have noticed that the mainstream media still has a monopoly on most advertising dollars–how many ads for Fortune 500 companies do you see on conservative websites?–and sites like Hot Air and Townhall Media struggle to get major advertisers or even links from news sites that purport to be neutral.

A lot of centrists distrust Pravda but still never see sites like ours. We are ever-so-slowly making progress, but the struggle is real.

A few years back, Townhall began our VIP programs not because we wanted to put a lot of content behind a paywall but because it was necessary to stay in business. Our most loyal readers stepped up because they saw the value of keeping independent media alive–we don’t get that USAID money the left does; indeed, that support has been a lifeline.

That need hasn’t gone away. We still rely on your help. That’s why we keep asking those of you who haven’t yet signed up for VIP to do so.

The VIP program has grown a lot since we started it, for which we are grateful. It has kept us afloat during the difficult years when the censorship was at its worst. But while you may think, given the relative freeing up of information flow, that the Right has won the censorship wars, we see web analytics that still shows some of our most hard-hitting reporting being throttled. Articles that start getting traction suddenly get throttled, which throttles our revenue.

So, once again, I am asking for your help as if I were Bernie Sanders running for president. If you haven’t signed up, take a moment to visit our VIP page and sign up. You get lots of perks, such as Ed’s shows, VIP articles, access to our comment threads, and if you sign up for Platinum, access to our vast library of documentaries and the ability to message the authors directly.
