The gloves are finally coming off. After years of violent street actions, perhaps going as far back as the Battle of Seattle in 1999, the US government will present a comprehensive response to leftist-anarchist terrorists, and in particular, their funding.
Today, the State Department added Antifa as a “foreign terrorist organization” to its counterterrorism list, which puts them on the same footing as ISIS, al-Qaeda, and Hezbollah. Julio Rosas first reported it today on Twitter, and then followed up at his Mostly Peaceful substack platform:
BREAKING: The State Department is going to designate Antifa as a foreign terrorist organization as soon as today, per a senior U.S. official. This is in addition to being designated as a domestic terrorist organization.

In a statement to MostlyPeaceful.media, State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said:
“The anarchists, Marxists, and violent extremists of Antifa have waged a terror campaign in the United States and across the Western world for decades, carrying out bombings, beatings, shootings, and riots in service of their extreme agenda. The State Department is committed to identifying and dismantling these terror networks that conspire to ruthlessly suppress the will of the people and violently undermine the very foundations of the United States and Western Civilization.”
The four Antifa groups to be first labeled as a FTO are:
Antifa Ost, based in Germany
The International Revolutionary Front, also known as the Informal Anarchist Federation, based in Italy
Armed Proletarian Justice, based in Greece
Revolutionary Class Self Defense, based in Greece
Each of the groups are responsible for carrying out multiple attacks in Europe, according to the State Department. Antifa Ost was labeled as a terrorist organization by Hungary in September 2025 after the group’s militants assaulted nine people with hammers, batons, and pepper spray in Budapest, Hungary in 2023.
The Department of Justice has already announced that it considers Antifa a “domestic terror” network, although the designation has little legal weight. The FBI already has multiple investigations into Antifa operations, and the recent violence at UC Berkeley will undoubtedly be added to those probes. However, the FBI and the DoJ are approaching Antifa in a law-enforcement sense, which means investigators and prosecutors have to act within the bounds of reasonable suspicion, probable cause, and evidence beyond a reasonable doubt in each case, depending on the stage of the investigations. It will take a lot of effort to use a RICO approach to Antifa, the mechanism by which the DoJ can systemically address the anarchist violence that Antifa deploys to terrorize communities and their political opponents.
The State Department has more tools at its disposal with this designation, as Fox News explains. And those tools will complement the efforts already underway at the DoJ:
The State Department will designate four Antifa-linked groups operating in Europe as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and Specifically Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs) — putting them among the likes of ISIS, al-Qaeda and Hezbollah — Fox News Digital has learned. …
The designation requires U.S. financial institutions to freeze assets of FTOs and SDGTs and ban entry of the group’s members into the U.S. It allows the U.S. to criminally prosecute those under U.S. jurisdiction who offer material support to FTOs or conspire to offer such support.
That is the reason why a whole-of-government approach is necessary. Julio and others had urged the Trump administration to take this step a month ago, testifying at a White House roundtable about their experiences with Antifa, its violence, and its organization.
The real question, however, is why successive administrations had avoided this issue for as long as they did. Antifa violence has taken place openly, frequently, and has been directed not just at political opponents but also at public institutions. They got a nitrogen-oxide boost in the George Floyd riots, and have been part of the unrest that erupted in the wake of the Hamas massacres of October 7, 2023. As far back as the Battle of Seattle 26 years ago at the World Trade Organization meeting, foreign-funded anarchists have operated with impunity in the US.
It’s time for that impunity to end. The best method for that is to follow the money, and then to cut it off and prosecute those who fund political violence in the US. This is a long-delayed and necessary step in imposing consequences for domestic and foreign terrorism.
