Shooting near Chicago O’Hare leaves one man wounded

A 25-year-old man was shot twice in his lower body and wounded in an altercation outside Chicago O’Hare International Airport early Wednesday.

The incident started with six to seven black-clad men fighting in the terminal before spilling outside, police dispatchers said over the radio, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Eventually one of the men opened fire, hitting the unnamed victim.

“They start fighting, regular fighting, after that they [go] in the car, they bring the gun and then start shooting. After that, I hit the ground,” Mahmoud, a worker at the airport who did not provide his surname, told the newspaper.

Other witnesses heard the gunfire.

“It must’ve been about quarter to 1, I heard what sounded like just rapid-fire, like automatic fire. I looked out my window … and I saw people scattering in both directions. And then I heard a bunch of single shots,” James Van Schaick, who was staying at a hotel by the airport, told Chicago’s WGN-TV.

The victim was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. Arrival lanes at the airport that were closed due to the police response reopened at 5:15 a.m., airport officials said on X.
