Prince George’s public works officials find empty casket dumped on a sidewalk

Workers with the Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation retrieved an empty casket from a curb earlier this week.

Prince George’s County Councilmember Calvin Hawkins II, at-large Democrat, said on Facebook that a constituent of his had called about the casket.

“This has to be among the top five unbelievable constituent calls that I have responded to as public servant over the last 30 years! An abandoned casket left on the curb… Who in the world….,” Mr. Hawkins wrote Thursday.

Public works officials posted a video of the casket retrieval on social media.

“We’ve picked up a lot over the years—furniture, tires, even toilets. But this? A whole casket? Illegal dumping isn’t just messy—it’s dangerous, costly, and completely unacceptable,” they wrote in a caption.

The casket, which had been dumped in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, was empty according to WTOP-FM. The punishment for littering can be up to a year in jail or a fine of up to $17,000.
