Jessica Aber, the former U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was found dead Saturday morning in her home in Alexandria, police said. She was 43.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia will determine the cause of Ms. Aber’s death, which is being investigated, the Alexandria Police Department said in a statement.
Police received a report about an unresponsive woman in a home in the 900 block of Beverley Drive around 9:18 a.m. Saturday. When officers arrived, they found Ms. Aber dead, police said.
According to CBS News, the Alexandria Police Department said “as a matter of protocol, an investigation is underway surrounding the circumstances of her death.”
Ms. Aber was nominated to be U.S. attorney by former President Joseph R. Biden and was confirmed by the Senate in 2021. She resigned about two months ago after President Trump took office.
Ms. Aber had served as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia beginning in 2009.Her death drew responses from colleagues, mourning her and praising her legal career.
An X post from the U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert representing the Eastern District of Virginia said the community is heartbroken.
“We are heartbroken beyond words to learn of the passing of our friend and former colleague U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber. “She was unmatched as a leader, mentor, and prosecutor, and she is simply irreplaceable as a human being. We remain in awe of how much she accomplished in her all too brief time in this world”.
And Jason Miyares, the Republican attorney general of Virginia, said his prayers are with her family.
“I am saddened to learn of the passing of Jessica Aber, whose career of public service included US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia and whose work with Ceasefire Virginia saved more lives than we may ever realize,” he posted on X.
