I’m ‘Very Proud of the Person I Am Today’ – HotAir

On Friday, Maine Senate Candidate Graham Planter released a video distancing himself from…himself. He’s not denying he said all of things that have been reported by various news outlets. Instead he’s claiming that he is a different person now. He released the five-minute-long video in which he described his “trajectory” since 2012.

Predictably, people on the left are really impressed with Platner’s scripted response.

DNC Chair Ken Martin gave Platner his blessing.

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin said Sunday that old Reddit posts from Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner that resurfaced last week are not “disqualifying” but are “hurtful” and “offensive.”

“I don’t think they’re disqualifying, but certainly they’re not right, and I’m glad that he apologized for them,” Martin told CNN on Sunday. “They’re indefensible, they’re hurtful and they’re offensive.”

I said last week that I don’t think you can hold people to everything they said a decade ago. People change over time. The problem for Platner is that his most politically defining comments weren’t a decade ago but 4-5 years ago when he was 36 or 37-years-old. This is the real problem which he’s trying to skate past by focusing on a 2012 time frame.

Just to be very clear what we’re talking about here, the comments he made in the last five years include the following:

In one now-deleted Reddit comment from 2021, Platner responded to a thread about people becoming more conservative as they age by saying: “I got older and became a communist.” The comment was made on a subreddit called r/Antiwork, a far-left forum “for those who want to end work.”…

In another Reddit post that year, Platner reflected on his life after his military service, saying he was “a vegetable growing, psychedelics taking socialist these days. After the war, I’ve pretty much stopped believing in any of the patriotic nonsense that got me there in the first place, and am a firm believer that the best thing a person can do is help their neighbors and live a loving life.”

“Still got the guns though,” he added. “I don’t trust the fascists to act politely.”…

In one deleted comment, in a thread about a Black army lieutenant who was held at gunpoint and pepper-sprayed by police during a traffic stop, one Reddit user wrote, “Bastards. Cops are bastards.” Platner replied, “All of them, in fact.”

Platner also frequently weighed in on police violence, arguing that misconduct was “a problem that extends deep into the profession as a whole” and rejecting claims of accidental shootings after incidents such as the killing of Minneapolis Black man Daunte Wright, writing, “F**k these cops.”…

In another since-removed post from 2020, Platner responded to a thread titled “White people aren’t as racist or stupid as Trump thinks” by writing, “Living in white rural America, I’m afraid to tell you they actually are.”

In summary:

  • He’s a communist.
  • He’s a drug-taking socialist.
  • He’s prepared for a shooting war against “the fascists.”
  • All cops are bastards.
  • White people are stupid racists.

None of these things are stuff he was saying 12-13 years ago when he got out of the service. All of these are things he said as little as four years ago. And because he dropped off Reddit at this time, there’s really no evidence he changed since then.

In the video he says that finding real community, falling in love and starting a business changed him. But he only moved back to Maine in 2021. He’s only been married for one year. Yet his posts on Reddit were removed just 3 months ago, because they represented a problem for his campaign. So where is the evidence that he changed?

I think it’s very likely he’s lying which is why he’s not addressing the specifics of what he said or when he said it. He’s trying to shut the door on the whole thing at once by portraying it as someone else who did those things and the left is eager to see him succeed.

If there are any real journalists left they’ll ask Platner some follow up questions:

  • When did you stop thinking of yourself as a communist and why?
  • What do you admire about capitalism?
  • When did you take psychedelics and have you stopped?
  • Do you still believe “the fascists” are a threat and should people prepare to fight them with weapons?
  • What in the last four years changed your mind about the police?
  • Do you believe in systemic racism and do you think white residents of Maine are racists?

You can bet his campaign has been busy whipping up scripted answers for questions like these so be prepared with a few follow ups. In short, don’t let him pretend this was all something he believed long ago in a different life. He was 37-years-old at the time, not an angry kid.
