Gunman wounds five at Army’s Fort Stewart in Georgia; suspect in custody

A gunman opened fire inside Fort Stewart, Georgia, and wounded five people before being arrested Wednesday morning, Army officials said.

Officials said the suspect was arrested around 11:35 a.m. following a shooting rampage that sent the base into a lockdown. The Army said there was no longer a threat to the community after the suspect, who hasn’t been identified, was taken into custody.

“We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers,” Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp posted on social media.

A Fort Stewart police spokesperson said the lockdown went into effect just after 11 a.m. and largely covered an airfield and schools located on the premises. People in the target area were urged to lock themselves indoors and stay away from windows.

Authorities did not provide an update on the victims’ status.

Just off base, Liberty County Schools also went into lockdown as a precaution.

Fort Stewart is located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah.
