Fire at Tesla charging stations in Massachusetts was arson, say investigators

State and local officials are investigating a fire at a Tesla charging station in Littleton, Massachusetts, as arson.

The blaze started at around 1 a.m. Monday. Six charging stations caught fire, with a seventh igniting after police responded but before the Littleton Electric Light & Water Departments showed up to turn off the power, the Littleton Police Department said in a release.

“The electricity is one of our bigger issues that we’re dealing with in making sure that not only the public, but the firefighters are safe. So, we kept our distance from the charged electrical equipment,” Littleton Fire Chief Steele McCurdy told Boston’s WBZ-TV.

There were no injuries, police said.

All seven chargers were heavily damaged by the flames. Littleton and Massachusetts state police and fire officials believe the fires were started intentionally, the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services said in a release.

People with information, including observations of others or of cars that may have been near the charging stations at the time of the fire, are asked to call 1-800-682-9229. Tipsters can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

The Littleton incident is not the only case of attacks targeting Tesla vehicles. A suspect was caught at a Loveland, Colorado, Tesla dealership with incendiary devices last week and has been accused of previously writing graffiti and throwing Molotov cocktails at the same dealership.
