A Democrat member of Congress from Dallas has drawn criticism for taking a jab at the Texas governor and the fact that he is in a wheelchair in remarks at a Human Rights Campaign dinner Saturday. The remarks went viral Tuesday.
In the context of thanking the pro-LGBT rights organization’s board member Morgan Cox, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, mocked Republican Gov. Greg Abbott for being disabled.
“Thank you so much, Morgan, because we in these hot-a** Texas streets, honey,” Crockett said. “Y’all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there. Come on, now! And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot-a** mess, honey.”
Abbott was paralyzed from the waist down after a tree fell on him while he was out on a run in his 20s, according to his website. He has used a wheelchair for more than 40 years now. The Texas governor is a prominent voice in the Republican Party for Second Amendment protections, school choice, and immigration policy.
The comment sparked backlash from Republicans online.
“Jasmine Crockett is the perfect spokesperson for today’s Democrats: out of touch and completely unhinged,” National Republican Congressional Committee press secretary Mike Marinella said in a public statement. “When you’ve got no message and no agenda, all that’s left is hate.”
One of Crockett’s fellow Texas delegation members, Rep. Randy Weber, a Republican, told Fox News Digital he would introduce a censure resolution against the lawmaker imminently.
“The story of our great governor of Texas is one of unwavering resilience and perseverance,” Weber told Fox. “Meanwhile, the actions of Jasmine Crockett—stooping to vile levels of discrimination and despicable political attacks—are nothing short of reprehensible.”
Crockett has drawn a lot of attention lately for her words.
Attorney General Pam Bondi is now calling for Crockett to condemn violence against Elon Musk and Tesla that the representative allegedly encouraged. Three flammable devices were found in a Tesla dealership in Austin after Crockett publicly said she wanted to see Musk taken down. She later clarified she referred to a peaceful protest and did not call for violence.
“Just in case the slow people listening decide to clip this up later, I just want to say that I have never promoted violence whatsoever,” Crockett told MSNBC. “Yet I’ve also never made excuses for those violent actors, such as the ones on Jan. 6. So, Pam Bondi, if you have an issue with terrorism, maybe you should talk to your boss about locking back up those guys that he let out that participated in Jan. 6.”
Trump pardoned the more than 1,500 Americans charged with crimes in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol protest, The Daily Signal previously reported.
Bondi responded in a Fox News interview that Crockett’s words as an elected representative have consequences.
“She needs to unequivocally denounce the violence,” Bondi said in the Fox interview. “She must apologize immediately not only to all Texans, but to our country, to the American shareholders of Tesla, because she is promoting violence.”
Crockett has also drawn the attention of both sides of the aisle in recent weeks for using profanity in public statements, including in her reaction to Trump’s joint address to Congress. Crockett and a group of Democrat lawmakers walked out of the President’s address to protest his administration.
“Listen, he up there, he spewing all kinds of nonsense and bullsh**, let me just be real,” Crockett said in a Facebook Live video. “We wasn’t going to sit for that sh**.”
Abbott’s office did not respond to a request for comment from The Daily Signal, and Crockett’s office declined to comment.
