President Trump will meet with Colombian President Gustavo Petro at the White House next month.
“I look forward to having a meeting with Gustavo Petro, the President of Colombia, in the White House, during the first week of February,” Mr. Trump said on Truth Social.
The president hinted that the meeting could focus on the flow of drugs into the U.S.
“I am sure it will work out very well for Colombia, and the U.S.A., but, cocaine and other drugs must be STOPPED from coming into the United States,” he said.
Mr. Trump spoke over the phone with the Colombian president earlier this week. He said Mr. Petro “called to explain the situation of drugs and other disagreements” the leaders have had.
“I appreciated his call and tone, and look forward to meeting with him in the near future,” Mr. Trump said.
The two have recently sparred over Mr. Trump’s actions taken against Venezuela and the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who is now in a New York jail facing drug trafficking and weapons charges.
When speaking last month about the military actions in Venezuela, Mr. Trump called Mr. Petro “no friend of the United States” and warned that “he’s got to watch his a—.”
On Sunday, Mr. Trump called the Colombian leader a “sick man” who “likes selling cocaine to the United States.”
When asked about a potential military operation in Colombia, he said, “Sounds good to me.”
Mr. Petro was one of the first leaders to criticize the U.S.’s military action in Venezuela, calling the U.S. raid an “attack on the sovereignty of Venezuela and Latin America,” according to Al Jazeera.
Mr. Petro told CBS News on Thursday that he hopes a meeting with Mr. Trump would “stop a world war.”
