Former NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya is stepping onto the political field to run for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota, giving Republicans a high‑profile contender in a state they have long believed should be more competitive.
Ms. Tafoya has flirted with running for public office for years. She entered the race Wednesday with a law-and-order platform as Gov. Tim Walz and fellow Democrats grapple with a massive Medicaid fraud scandal and clashes over President Trump’s immigration enforcement crackdown.
In her announcement video, Ms. Tafoya cast herself as a political outsider fed up with leaders in Minnesota and Washington who she says are selling out taxpayers struggling to stay afloat.
“For too long, hardworking people have ripped off by criminals, corporations and career politicians, and the people doing everything right are paying the biggest price,” the 61-year-old married mother said in her announcement video. “Well, I’m not going to stay on the sidelines any longer. Starting today, I’m running for the United States Senate.”
“As Minnesota’s senator, I will clean up the system, fighting corruption, ending the fraud, and protecting your tax dollars,” she said. “I will protect what’s fair and safe, standing with our law enforcement officers, deporting dangerous criminals, and keeping female sports for female athletes.”
Ms. Tafoya is running for the seat currently held by Democratic Sen. Tina Smith, who is not seeking reelection.
