Jack Smith, special prosecutor who pursued Trump, to testify publicly to Congress

Former Special Counsel Jack Smith, who pursued two criminal cases against President Trump during the Biden administration, will testify publicly about the prosecutions later this month.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, Ohio Republican, said the hearing is slated for Jan. 22.

Mr. Smith brought a case in Florida accusing the president of mishandling classified documents, and another case in Washington accusing him of trying to subvert the 2020 election.

The Florida case hit roadblocks over questions about whether Mr. Smith was illegally appointed special counsel, and both cases disappeared when Mr. Trump won the election.

But allegations of Justice Department misdeeds in pursuit of Mr. Trump have continued to swirl.

Mr. Smith testified privately to Mr. Jordan’s committee in December but he had long said he wanted to do it publicly. It appears his and Mr. Jordan’s interests now align on that.

Lawmakers are likely to grill Mr. Smith over his office’s decision to seek subpoenas for phone-call records of sitting members of Congress.

Mr. Smith, in his testimony last month, said he wanted the records so he could know with whom Mr. Trump was speaking and when.

“We got these records in a manner that was consistent with the law and consistent with department policy,” he said. “There was nothing improper about how we got these records.”
