He’s Not MAGA. He’s a Basement-Dwelling Loner With A Grudge. – HotAir

When news broke that the FBI had finally arrested a suspect who placed pipe bombs at RNC and DNC headquarters in January 2021, I offered this prediction: “this will turn out to be unrelated to the J6 riot or law enforcement and intelligence agencies, but will be a rando nutcase anarchist.” I could have also predicted that the Protection Racket Media would attempt to make the perp into a right-wing MAGA nutcase who voted for Donald Trump. I didn’t have “pretend he’s a white guy” on my Bingo card, but you can’t win ’em all.

Otherwise, my predictions have held up pretty well. Despite attempts in the media to link Brian Cole to Trump and MAGA, no evidence corroborating that has emerged. Instead, his family explained late yesterday that Cole has no political affiliations, never supported Donald Trump, and mainly lived as a loner in his mother’s basement. His grandmother explained Cole’s life to the Daily Mail:

But Loretta, his grandmother, said Cole has no party affiliation and never votes.

Rather, he keeps to himself, living in his mother’s basement in Woodbridge, Virginia, where he’s been grieving the loss of his beloved pet chihuahua, while working a data entry job for his family’s bail bonds business.

‘He’s not politically affiliated with anything,’ the grandmother told the Daily Mail during an interview at her home in Gainesville, Virginia. ‘He has no social media contacts. He’s never online going back and forth with politics or anything like that. He says he don’t like either party.

‘He’s borderline autistic,’ she added. ‘He’s slow. He may be 30, but he’s got the mind of a 16-year-old. That’s why we’re thinking – What the hell? What’s going on?’

Loretta doesn’t believe that her grandson actually carried out the attempted attacks, which thankfully never came to fruition. However, sources within the Department of Justice told the Associated Press that he confessed. This is where the “MAGA” narrative originated as well:

Brian Cole Jr. spoke to law-enforcement officers for more than four hours after his arrest, a federal prosecutor, Charles Jones, said Friday during Cole’s initial court appearance.

The prosecutor did not elaborate on what Cole said to investigators, but two people familiar with the matter told the AP he confessed to planting the devices Jan. 5, 2021. Cole also indicated that he believed conspiracy theories around the 2020 election that President Trump has insisted was stolen and expressed views supportive of Trump, said the people, who were not authorized to discuss by name an ongoing investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Is that possible? Perhaps, although it would certainly seem pretty weird for someone to be so passionate about an election in which he hadn’t voted, according to his grandmother. Also, according to his grandmother, the suspect never discussed politics, except to note his disdain for both parties. That makes more sense for a motive than partisanship, considering that pipe bombs were left at the HQs of the RNC as well as the DNC. If MAGA passion motivated the terror attack attempt, why try to attack the RNC, which had been funding Trump’s election challenges up to that point.

Plus, as the Daily Wire discovered, the suspect’s father had gotten into a legal tangle with the first Trump administration over – wait for it – immigration issues. The Daily Wire reported the details on Thursday:

Weeks before 30-year-old Cole Jr. allegedly planted pipe bombs at the headquarters of the Democrat and Republican parties on January 5, 2021, a court ruled against the company in its lawsuit attacking the Trump administration on immigration issues, The Daily Wire has learned. An FBI affidavit in the case notes that the suspect works for a bail bond company and lives with his mother. …

Cole Jr. and his father worked as bail bondsmen under various company names, including Free U Bonds, initially in Fairfax County, Virginia. Public records suggest that the father moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, around 2017.

One of those corporate names was StateWide Bonding, Inc., an immigration-bond company that helps illegal immigrants avoid jail. …

StateWide sued the Trump administration’s Department of Homeland Security over its policies relating to illegal immigrants. Weeks before Cole allegedly planted the pipe bombs, on November 10, 2020, the U.S. Court of Appeals in D.C. sided with the administration on the case, ruling that the lower court had properly thrown out all of StateWide’s claims.

One of several lawsuits complained that StateWide was being harmed unfairly when its illegal immigrant clients failed to appear at court dates. “Statewide have secured the bond for thousands of immigrants… If an immigrant does not appear, that failure to appear is considered a breach of bond… When a bond is breached, at that point, all Plaintiffs are subjected to a steep financial penalty,” it said.

The Trump administration had cracked down on absconders in his first term. That apparently created legal and financial problems for Cole Sr and his son. The appellate ruling against their bond business came less than two months before the attempted pipe-bombings. That seems like a more direct motive than Cole Jr’s supposed “MAGA” sympathies, if indeed he claimed them in his interrogation. In fact, that legal track record makes the idea that Cole Jr was unhappy about Trump’s loss very difficult to credit.

This makes the MAGA-related motive even less believable (via Twitchy):

CNN has since changed its story, but the DoJ affidavit has the details, emphasis mine:

The FBI has identified one bank checking account and six credit cards (the “Accounts”) used by COLE. The FBI obtained records for the checking account and three credit cards for the time period January 2018 to January 2021. Three additional credit cards were obtained for the time period of January 2018 to November 2025. The FBI reviewed the transaction history for all of these Accounts.

During 2019 and 2020, COLE purchased multiple items consistent with the components that were used to manufacture the pipe bombs placed at the RNC and DNC. COLE used the Accounts to purchase these items from physical retail locations in northern Virginia, as described in more detail below[.]

Most of the materials purchased for the manufacture of the pipe bombs took place before the election. The timeline parallels the legal and financial issues that the Coles experienced, not the “stolen election” motive. The affidavit shows a burst of purchases in November and December to finish off the bombs, but that looks much more related to the loss of the Coles’ appeal on November 10, 2020 than the election.

Still, these are early days. The DoJ will have to present its case to a jury, unless Cole pleads out based on his confession. Either way, the case and its evidence will become part of the public record. About the only firm conclusions we can reach at the moment is (a) Brian Cole Jr is indeed a rando nutcase, and (b) the FBI should have caught him years ago. That story will prove very interesting to follow, much more interesting than the Brian Cole Jr story ever will be.

Editor’s note: If we thought our job in pushing back against the Academia/media/Democrat censorship complex was over with the election, think again. This is going to be a long fight.
