A Marine died Wednesday at Camp Pendleton, 40 miles north of San Diego, after getting injured in a vehicle accident during training.
An unspecified “tactical vehicle” suffered the mishap at about 1:45 p.m., Marine officials said.
The Marine Corps did not specify the nature of the accident or of the decedent’s injuries, with the Marine’s identity held until 24 hours after notification of loved ones.
The cause of the vehicle mishap is being investigated. Officials have said that the incident is not related to the annual Steel Knight training exercise, which started at Camp Pendleton on Monday, according to The Associated Press.
The Marine was a member of the I Marine Expeditionary Force, the “largest warfighting Marine Air-Ground Task Force,” according to the force’s website. It has been based out of Camp Pendleton since the 1970s.
