Saturday’s Final Word – HotAir

Saturday night’s all right for tabbing

Ed: If only Pelosi had retired at 6 months …

===

NY Post: Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her husband made at least $130 million in stock profits over the course of the California Democrat’s 37 years in Congress — a staggering return of 16,930%. …

Before first taking Congressional office in 1987, the then-47-year-old freshman and her hubby, venture capitalist Paul Pelosi, reported between $610,000 and $785,000 in stocks in their portfolio, according to a copy of her “hand delivered” 1987 financial disclosure form.

That portfolio has soared to $133.7 million today, according to the latest estimates from Quiver Quantitative.

That represents an eye-watering profit of 16,930% — compared to 2,300% for the Dow Jones over those years.

Ed: The lesson here: Play the DJIA, not the S&P 500. More seriously, the real lesson is that Capitol Hill is a swamp by which the governing elite enrich themselves while impovershing the rest of us, Want to know what else increased exponentially during Pelosi’s 40 years in Congress? The national debt. I doubt that these two data points are unrelated.

===

Ed: If she hadn’t engineered the Biden cover-up and Kamala switcheroo, I bet Pelosi would have run for another term in Congress.

David Marcus at Fox News: Pelosi has presided over one of the greatest leftward lurches of any party, anywhere, during her time in power. When she first took the gavel in 2007, then-presidential candidate Barack Obama was still opposing gay marriage (or at least saying he did) owing to his deep Christian beliefs. No Democrat in Congress has any such beliefs today.

Choose an issue, any issue, from abortion to climate, from crime and punishment to free speech. The Democrats have moved squarely away from core American values to a big government free-for-all in which the Mommy State always knows best.

No, Pelosi is not a victim of the socialist coup that took over the Democrats. Andrew Cuomo is, and Sen. Chuck Schumer sure looks like one. But not Pelosi. Do you really think she opposes free buses or government grocery stores?

Ed: I read some commentary yesterday that Pelosi was the last of the old-time Democrats. That’s nonsense. She was the vanguard of the New Left that pushed Democrats toward socialism. The only friction between her and AOC and the Squad is purely a power fight at the end of Pelosi’s arc. She got replaced.

Ed: Er … what is the problem with a pharmacy being farther away than a half-mile? That’s a 20-minute walk at worst, and practically a waste of gasoline. It’s also a weird metric. I suspect that this includes a lot of rural Massachusetts residents who live a mile or more from any retail commerce. If we are counting suburban and urban residents, I’d bet the number who live within five miles of a pharmacy would include nearly everyone.

David Reaboi at The Tablet: What Carlson and Fuentes broadcast isn’t “hate”; it’s a cognitive map built entirely on lies. Yet most people, including many Jews, still describe antisemitism as “anti-Jewish racism.” That mistake is fatal. Racism begins with emotion; antisemitism begins with explanation. Its logic is counterfeit, but it poses as reason all the same.

This confusion has deep roots. After the civil-rights era, “hate” became the moral grammar through which all prejudice was understood. Jewish institutions, eager to speak that language, adopted it wholesale. Once antisemitism was redefined as an emotional or linguistic offense, its conspiracy core was buried under “tropes.” In that bucket, the falsehoods that launched pogroms and genocides—blood libel, world-Jewish control—were lumped together with trivial stereotypes.

The result was a flattening of meaning. Even the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s official definition, adopted by governments and many Jewish groups, reflects this collapse. Its warning against “mendacious, dehumanizing, or demonizing allegations about Jews” treats antisemitism as a moral failure rather than an epistemic one.

The problem isn’t cruelty; it’s falsity, and the fact that for two millennia, people have acted on those lies.

Ed: It may be all of the above, actually. Reaboi’s essay should be read in full, and it has some cutting insights into the anti-Semitism on the fringes of the Right. However, I believe that it’s more than just a case of a pathological viewpoint — it’s also hate.

Moreno asked Schumer if his proposal was in writing that people could look at.. and if people making millions would still receive the COVID-era subsidies.

Moreno: “I was going to ask him before he stormed out of the room because evidently he doesn‘t want to hear any opposing views or actually engage in meaningful negotiation … Would he continue 0 dollar premiums, which we know for a FACT, have enormous levels of fraud..”

“If he had stayed, I would have asked him a third question: Does he these monies to go directly to insurance companies?”

Ed: Taking his ball and stomping off is Chuckee’s brand these days, no? Schumer won’t put anything in writing, even after six weeks of stomping off and hiding the government funding.

The Daily Wire: A Democrat-backed bill sitting on Governor JB Pritzker’s desk would turn Illinois into an assisted suicide destination and severely curtail the rights of Christian doctors, a conservative legal group is warning.

Just a few hours after midnight on Halloween morning, Democrats in the Illinois Senate rammed through legislation that would legalize doctor-assisted suicide in a 30–27 vote. The bill, which was passed by the state House in May, is awaiting Pritzker’s signature. It would allow doctors to prescribe deadly pills to those who are sick and have been given a prognosis of less than six months to live. …

“You’re not just allowing physicians to give people deadly drugs to kill themselves, but you’re actually forcing us or people of faith, to be part of it, to promote it,” Peter Breen, the head of litigation at Thomas More Society, told The Daily Wire. “I know of no other state where the legislature has gone this far in restricting the religious liberty rights of people of faith.”

Ed: But hey, NO KINGS, amirite?

Ed: Uff da. Attorneys keep self-immolating through the lazy use of AI. I can understand why associates might use AI as a tool for case law, but there is no excuse for failures to check the results carefully. Why, it’s as if attorneys (and in this case, not even technically an attorney at the bar) are used to BSing their way through trials and motions. Kind of like how the authors of studies do.

Axios: James Talarico, a Texas Democrat running for U.S. Senate who has put his faith at the forefront of his campaign, follows several adult film performers, escorts and OnlyFans models on Instagram, according to an Axios review.

The big picture: Talarico, 36, a seminarian and state House member, has become a sensation in Texas politics by talking about how his Christianity is the basis for his Democratic politics. …

Zoom in: Talarico follows 10 Instagram accounts of women who are popular porn actors, OnlyFans models, and have accounts on escort sites, according to publicly available accounts viewed by Axios in recent weeks.

Ed: Er … maybe “zoom in” is not the best terminology for this development. Just sayin’. Also, it looks like Jasmine Crockett’s oppo-research team has hit the ground running.
