GoFundMe Accused of Creating NGO Fundraising Pages Without NGOs Knowing – HotAir

WOWSAHS

Way back, probably, I dunno, ten or fifteen years or so, when I was a part-time retail employee, major dad retired and going to school, and stuff around the house just would not cooperate by staying in operating condition, I started a little GoFundMe to help supplement what we were spending getting feral cats fixed who ended up in our yard.

People were extraordinarily generous. Had my goal in a trice and damn near a dozen cats taken care of at our local vet’s.

I thought that was a pretty nifty option for good intentions or times of desperate need.

As the years went on and the site’s sanctimonious, progressive proclivities became blazingly obvious, I kind of soured on them.

What finally made them persona non grata in my view was what they did to the Canadian truckers’ convoy.

It was unconscionable.

From ‘seizing’ the $9 MILLION raised to help support the protests…

Freedom Convoy: GoFundMe seizes funds of Canada ‘occupation’

GoFundMe says it will withhold millions of dollars raised for Canadian truckers protesting against vaccine mandates, citing police reports of violence.

The Freedom Convoy has been rallying since last weekend, and more protests are expected in Toronto and Ottawa.

In a statement, the crowdfunding website said it would withhold the donations already made, and refund donors who fill out a request form.

Another online platform has offered to take donations for the convoy instead.

Of the thousands who joined the truckers’ protest, three people have so far been arrested: one for carrying a weapon, one charged with mischief under $5,000, and another with uttering threats on social media.

…to removing the donation page altogether and then threatening to ‘redistribute’ the truckers’ funds to charity…

Facing a potential fraud investigation by the state of Florida, GoFundMe reversed a decision to redistribute money given by thousands of donors to the Canadian “Freedom Convoy” protesting COVID-19 regulations.

On Friday, the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe froze the convoy’s official campaign, claiming law enforcement convinced the company that the convoy had become violent and unlawful.

GoFundMe encouraged donors to submit a refund form, and said that any funds not properly returned to donors would be donated to a charity chosen by the Freedom Convoy.

Within hours, however, GoFundMe walked back the refund applications, instead announcing it would be refunding donors automatically.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said that he would “investigate” the company, accusing them of fraud.

…the donation site hardly covered itself in trustworthy glory.

Four states are investigating GoFundMe after the fundraising service banned donations to an organization of truckers protesting COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in Canada.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said on Wednesday that his office will investigate GoFundMe for blocking and withholding donations already made to the platform through its website. Removing the campaign from its site could violate the state’s Deceptive Trade Practices Act, he said.

“GoFundMe’s response to an anti-mandate, pro-liberty movement should ring alarm bells to anyone using the donation platform and, more broadly, any American wanting to protect their constitutional rights,” Attorney General Paxton said in a statement. “Many Texans donated to this worthy cause. I am acting to protect Texas consumers so that they know where their hard-earned money is going, rather than allowing GoFundMe to divert money to another cause without the consent of Texas citizens.”

It has been a subject of ire, outrage, and controversy, especially in regard to conservative individuals and fundraising ever since.

Most on the right, if they have to raise money, will utilize the different platforms available now, which are not so prone to arbitrary shutdowns or ‘seizures.’

What’s kind of funny is that GoFundMe’s warm glow in the eyes of some longtime supporters may be taking a hit shortly.

I can’t verify the date of this WABC 7 On Your Side report, but the information in it is still pretty eye-opening. I especially want to encourage you to watch all three and a half minutes if you run a little non-profit that files IRS returns, as the fellow in the video does.

He’s the head of the ‘Friends of the San Bruno Library Association,’ and what he found out purely by accident will blow your mind.

It turns out GoFundMe has used tax data and other publicly available sources to set up fundraising pages for over a million non-profits on its own, without the knowledge or permission of the particular non-profit.

…“GoFundMe has taken upon itself to create nonprofit pages for 1.4 million 501c3 organizations using public IRS data along with information from trusted partners like the PayPal”

“GoFundMe has created nonprofit pages for more than 1 million charities using public data.”

The reporter interviews a GoFundMe executive who has that BudLight shine on her as she explains how helpful GoFundMe has been by doing this ahead of time. All a non-profit has to do is ‘claim’ the thoughtfully prepared fundraising page it never knew it had.

Which might well already have funds in it, if patrons had gone looking to donate and stumbled across the GoFundMe page instead of, say, a non-profit’s website portal.

Schweet, huh? Everybody’s got an angle these days, and some are way sketchier than others.

The worst part is how they look you in the eye to convince you they’ve been doing you a favor the whole time.

It’s your fault you can’t appreciate them.
