WNBA Chicas Be All, ‘Gimme What I Want, What I Really, Really Want!!’ – HotAir

Oh, heavens to Murgatroyd. These preposterous, ill-mannered, loudmouthed females who get to play a game and get paid a heavily subsidized salary enabling them to do so have to stop with this ‘gimme’ business.

Just stop.

Back in March, when these same professional women were busy brutalizing the one individual who had anyone interested in watching their brand of B-Ball, I guess their limited brain trust decided it would be a terrific idea to threaten a ‘sit-out’ if they didn’t start getting paid more.

At the time, I compared women’s professional basketball to your basic electric vehicles. Both are more personal choices than universally loved, and the proof is that neither would be viable without the subsidies that underpin them from larger, more popular, and flush with cash operations. In the case of EVs, it was the government handing out the largesse to both automakers and car buyers who drove what sales there were. Without those (with the exception of Tesla, although those never hurt him), the pyramid scheme collapses of its own expense and unpopularity.

The WNBA is the same. Sure, the women make a lot less, much as they sell many fewer EVs, and there are fewer teams and much lower salary caps per team (they raised it to $1.5M this year, but many are nowhere near that much.). The only thing is, those teams never make the money that pays those salaries.

In 2024, the men’s league, the NBA, pulled in $11.3B – that’s billion with a ‘B’ – in revenues.

The women are working on reverse #mathz. So much so that the NBA and its investors, which underpins their entire operation down to the toilet paper and has for the twenty-nine years they’ve been footing the bill that the WNBA has NEVER turned a profit, are getting a bit antsy about continuing to pay those bills.

WNBA to lose ‘US$40m’ in 2024 season, NBA won’t see returns ‘for years’

The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is set to lose US$40 million this season and the National Basketball Association (NBA) won’t see any returns from the league for the foreseeable future, according to the New York Post.

It has been a record-breaking campaign for the WNBA, which has posted record viewership and attendances that have been fuelled by a standout draft class spearheaded by Indiana Fever sensation Caitlin Clark.

The league is yet to announce its ratings for this year’s finals, which were won by the New York Liberty, but it has been confirmed that the playoffs were the most viewed in 25 years across ESPN platforms.

The WNBA also had its most-watched regular season in 24 years at the end of September.

However, that engagement is yet to translate to the bottom line for the NBA, which reportedly owns 60 per cent of the WNBA and has pumped hundreds of millions of dollars into the league since its 1996 formation. The New York Post also states that when combining the NBA owners’ personal stakes in WNBA teams and the WNBA itself, the ownership amount rises to 75 per cent.

An NBA team executive told the New York Post: “The WNBA owes the NBA so much we won’t see any windfall for years.”

So those same folks who have been writing big, $40M subsidy checks every single year probably were not tickled to death to see the fancy free and totally dependent #wymmin children show up at the finals in tantrum shirts demanding more free money as if they had a product no one could live without.

When it should be crystal clear that the vast majority of American sports enthusiasts can easily survive without the WNBA.

PAY US WHAT YOU OWE US

I’m sure those announcers were looking for a sword to commit seppuku with afterward.

I’m sure those were aberrations. These are their two ‘bestest’ teams in the finals.

Riveting, no?

With these lucky chicas – and they are lucky – getting paid to play a game, plus new perqs like chartered flights instead of a team bus or cheap seats on a commercial flight…

…you’d think gratitude would enter the picture just a smidge. Maybe even a little motivation to do better, be more.

You’d THINK.

But when you’ve bought your own hype, told you’re the mostest specialist female thing EH-VAH, and somehow come to believe that bouncing a ball – often badly – around a court demanding more monies is a God-given right, no matter what sort of effect you produce on the bottom line?

Well.

Don’t be surprised when even the little income you were producing thanks to folks of good faith starts to drift away with a stunt like this.

When people are disgusted and laughing at you, they’re walking, too.

They’re even biting the hand that feeds them handsomely, and that’s, oh, so foolish.

The more this heats up, the more videos of their stellar gameplay start appearing, and the louder the howls of laughter become. Those are great for the bottom line.

What an ad to put butts in seats or purchase the pay-per-view/streaming package.

At least they haven’t made the fatal mistake the women’s soccer team did, of challenging a boy’s prep school team from, say, Little Mary’s Sisters of the Poor or some other obscure institution.

It would be another slaughter.

Although I’ll bet the prep kids could give them a basic math lesson.

When you’re not bringing anything to the table, the ‘owed’ becomes an obligation.

GIMME GIMME GIMME girls haven’t figured that out.
