Republicans cheer, Democrats stand still as Trump walks in for joint address to Congress

President Trump received a warm welcome from Republicans on Tuesday evening as he entered the House chamber to give the first address to a joint session of Congress of his second term.

Multiple hands reached down to shake the president’s hand as he walked in. He stopped to have mini-conversations with a select few. His smile grew wider as he descended into the chamber.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Georgia Republican, placed a red MAGA-style hat on her head  that read “Trump was right about everything” as soon as Mr. Trump walked in.

Democrats stood sill and unsmiling as he entered and did not clap their hands.

Some attendees started chanting “USA!” has he walked up to the podium and upon his very first line.

Some Democratic women in the room donned pink to protest Mr. Trump’s policies that they think have damaged women and families. Other Democrats were wearing blue and yellow, to signify support for Ukraine.

Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency, was also spotted.

The president will recap all he’s accomplished and outline his future plans as he remarks to the crowd that features Democrats and Republicans from both the House and Senate, along with Trump administration officials, allies and invited guests.

This is his first major speech to lawmakers collectively since taking office for the second time in January.

Trump officials earlier Tuesday said the speech will be split into two parts: discussing what he’s accomplished thus far, including the DOGE and tariffs, and a second part addressing fears of his initiatives like tariffs.

There are some notable guests who were invited to the address by the Trumps, including the family of Laken Riley, the young woman killed last year by an illegal immigrant; the family of Corey Comperatore, who was killed at the Butler, Pennsylvania, rally where the president himself was almost assassinated; and others who will put a face to the president’s policies.
