2024 election breaks spending record on House campaign ads

The 2024 election saw $1.7 billion spent on TV ads in House races, the most money ever dumped into congressional marketing.

According to AdImpact, a nonpartisan election tracker, Democrats were responsible for more than half of the House ad spending in their failed attempt to flip the lower chamber.

Republicans defended their slim majority, giving President-elect Donald Trump and his party unified control of the elected branches of government starting next year.

Most of the money spent on House races came from outside groups.

The House Majority PAC, an offshoot of the Democratic leadership, spent more than $219 million, and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, an arm of House Democrats, spent over $81 million. On the Republican side, the Congressional Leadership Fund ponied up $213 million, and the National Republican Congressional Committee, the party’s campaign arm, spent $52.9 million.

The money funneled in House races has been on the rise, jumping from $985 million in 2018 to $1.2 billion in 2020 and $1.5 billion in 2022.
