Tesla issues sweeping recall notice on Cybertrucks for faulty exterior panel

Tesla on Thursday issued a massive recall on its Cybertrucks to repair an exterior panel that could detach while the electric vehicle is in motion.

The recall impacts all Cybertrucks manufactured between November 2023 through Feb. 27, 2024 — about 46,000 vehicles, according to the notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Tesla informed customers of the issue on Feb. 21 and has received at least 151 warranty claims related to the issue. The company said that a detectable noise sounds in the vehicle’s cabin if the panel detaches and that it is not aware of any injuries or collisions related to the issue.

Tesla has instructed affected customers to take their Cybertrucks to a Tesla dealership, where the company will replace the rail panel assembly with one that meets durability standards.

The recall is the latest in a series that have plagued Tesla’s futuristic pickup truck since it launched in late 2023. Over the past year, the Cybertruck has had six recalls covering the windshield wiper, drive inverters, gas pedal and truck bed trim.

The recalls did not seriously affect the truck’s popularity among Tesla fans, who helped make it one of the most popular EVs in the U.S. despite slowing demand.

Thursday’s recall comes during difficult times for Tesla as it deals with declining sales, intense overseas competition and a diminished stock price. While the company enjoyed a stock price increase in the wake of President Trump’s election victory in November, it has seen a more than 40% reduction in value in the past few weeks.
