17-year-old arrested in connection to the slaying of paddleboarder in Maine

The Maine State Police arrested a 17-year-old boy as part of their investigation into the recent killing of a paddleboarder found dead near a pond in Union on July 3.

The victim, Sunshine Stewart, 48, was reported missing on the night of July 2 and found the next day. She died from strangulation and blunt force trauma, MSP said Thursday.

MSP arrested the teen, a resident of the state’s southern city, without incident Wednesday. The police didn’t name the boy or say what if any connection he had to the victim. They also didn’t say whether he was charged with any crimes linked to the case.

MSP said the investigation is ongoing.

Rachel Blumenberg, a friend of the victim who was staying with her when she went missing, told Portland’s WMTW-TV that she was “floored with elation and grief” after the arrest.
